Do you know Shri Ram had a Sister ?

Story of PRINCESS Shanta

According to the Valmiki Ramayana in Balakanda, 9th Sarga it is Sumantra(not Sumanthra), the minister of King Dashrath who mentions her name and the importance of her husband. In fact Vishnu Puran mentions Princess Shanta in the 4th Ansha, 18th Adhyaya as Dashrath’s daughter given to his friend, King Romapada of Anga kingdom.

Princess Shanta was the first born of King Dashrath and Queen Kaushalya. She was looked after with all love and care. She is said to be the perfect epitome of ‘beauty with brains.’

She was adopted by the King of Anga ‘Rompada’ and his wife ‘Vershini.’ (Vershini was the elder sister of Kausalya.) The elder sister never had a child. She had jokingly asked Kausalya to raise Shanta. Dasharatha and Kausalya agreed to the proposal.

Thus, Shanta became the princess of kingdom of Anga, Angadesh.

Shanta’s sacrifice bore King Dashrath’s sons

We all know that King Dashrath longed for a son but he couldn’t have one. The solution to this problem was through eternal Yagna performed by a Brahmin. One such Brahmin was RishyaShringi, but he was brought up in complete isolation, in fact he had no clue of the Existence of women. At this time Princess Shanta enters his life and with her beauty and intelligence wins RishyaShringi’s heart to bring him out of his isolation and into a family world.

Princess Shanta gave up all luxuries and married him, later on RishiyaShringi agreed to perform the ‘Putra Kameshthi’ Yagna which lead to the birth of Shri Ram, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan.
